Tuesday 20th September 2011, 7.00pm, Westbury Library, author John Doyle will be talking about his novel, The Last Coachman, and what it is like to be a first time novelist.
In July 2010 Melksham author John Doyle published his novel at the age of 71, six months after undergoing open-heart surgery. His decision to write it followed an intriguing search to discover more about his Irish grandfather’s life.
John is particularly pleased to be giving this talk at Westbury Library because he attends weekly cardiac rehab classes in the town and used work for the Institution of Engineering Designers in Westbury Leigh.
The Last Coachman is an historical thriller set against the background of the First World War and the 1916 Easter rebellion against British rule in Ireland. It follows the fortunes of Michael Quinlan and his son as they move to Scotland in search of work at a munitions factory after he loses his job as a coachman. Here they become inadvertently involved in an Irish rebel plot and the old ordered existence of the coachman is turned upside down.
John will be available to sign copies of his book which will be on sale at the event. His second novel published this summer is called “This Bitter Land”
